Library History

The Pennsville Public Library originated in 1937 as a library association operated under the supervision of a Board of Trustees. The association is incorporated, elects its own board, and is responsible for the operation of the library. The library serves a population of about 13,000. In 2011, there were nearly 35,000 times that someone walked through the doors of the library.

Funding

Most public libraries in NJ are Municipal Libraries, which are funded by mandatory tax levies. Pennsville Public Library is one of several non-municipal libraries in the entire state, and therefore is not entitled to state mandated tax funding.

Salem County Libraries

Salem County is home to three public libraries that are not required to be funded by state law: Elmer, Pennsville, and Woodstown Libraries. Only Salem Library is funded by taxes. In addition, Salem County is one of only two counties in the state that does not have a county library. For more information on the other libraries in the county, visit “LOGIN”.

* Until the closing of the Penns Grove Library, Salem County was home to four of the Association Libraries in the state.
